
Kelowna Bridge Reopens After Police Resolve Ice Cream Truck Incident
Kelowna’s William Bennett Bridge reopened Monday after being closed for 11 hours due to an unusual and alarming police incident. Early in the morning, at around 3:45 a.m., local RCMP responded to reports of a vehicle parked in the eastbound lanes of the bridge. The situation escalated when it was discovered that the vehicle was a Mr. Chill ice cream truck, and the driver appeared to be in distress. According to authorities, the individual allegedly set a small fire inside the truck before being taken into custody.
The incident drew significant attention, halting traffic and prompting a substantial police operation. For hours, officers worked to secure the scene, ensuring public safety while investigating the situation. To address potential risks, the RCMP called in their Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) to examine the vehicle. The truck was eventually declared safe for transport and towed off the bridge around 2:18 p.m.
