Ontario Braces for Powerful Winds and Blizzard Warnings

Southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), is under significant weather alerts as a cold front brings strong winds and snow to the region. Environment Canada has issued warnings of wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h today, with potential hazards such as power outages and broken tree branches. Residents are urged to secure loose objects and prepare for challenging conditions.

Toronto is expected to see a high of -1°C, with flurries intensifying later tonight as the cold front moves through. Meteorologist Bill Coulter predicts that between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m., areas north of Toronto could experience particularly intense snowfall. Southeastern Georgian Bay is under a full blizzard warning, with heavy snow expected to develop this afternoon, creating dangerous travel conditions. The biting winds are set to ease briefly on Tuesday but will bring another round of snowfall in the late afternoon, dropping approximately 5 cm across the region.

Travel remains hazardous in many parts of Ontario due to the ongoing storm. Thousands of residents are without power as strong winds have downed power lines and trees. As of Monday night, Hydro One reports that over 18,000 customers are affected, with outages fluctuating throughout the evening. The Ontario Provincial Police have also announced road closures in areas like Grey Bruce County due to dangerous driving conditions. Commuters are advised to check for updates and proceed with caution on icy roads.

Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring colder temperatures, with the high reaching only -6°C. Another clipper system is expected to arrive in the afternoon, further complicating conditions with additional snow and gusty winds. While Wednesday may see a slight reprieve with temperatures rising above freezing to 1°C, flurries and strong winds are likely to persist. By Friday, however, brighter skies and milder temperatures will provide some relief.

Stay informed, monitor weather alerts, and prepare for potential disruptions as this winter storm continues to impact southern Ontario.
