Liam Coen Joins Jaguars as Head Coach After Dramatic Turn of Events
The Jacksonville Jaguars have made headlines with one of the most unexpected coaching hires of the offseason, bringing on Liam Coen as their new head coach. This move comes after an unusual series of events that saw Coen reverse his decision to remain with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their offensive coordinator. Initially, Coen was set to stay in Tampa Bay after reportedly agreeing to a record-breaking contract that would make him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL. As per reports, Coen re-engaged with the Jaguars discreetly, scheduling an interview without notifying the Buccaneers. This led to a brief period of uncertainty, with Tampa Bay reportedly unable to contact him. Eventually, Coen informed Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles about his decision, leaving Tampa Bay in a difficult spot for the second consecutive year after losing their previous offensive coordinator, Dave Canales, to the Carolina Panthers.
Coen’s success with the Buccaneers’ offense in 2024 made him a hot commodity. Under his guidance, the team ranked in the top four in total offense, passing yards, rushing yards, and points per game. He also played a key role in quarterback Baker Mayfield’s resurgence, as Mayfield delivered a career-best season with 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns.
Now in Jacksonville, Coen’s main task will be developing quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the 2021 No. 1 overall pick. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, Lawrence has yet to find the consistency needed to elevate the Jaguars to the next level.
