In a tragic event that has left Raleigh shaken, First Class Officer Max A. Gillick of the Raleigh Police Department (RPD) was critically injured during a deadly shootout in the Renaissance Park neighborhood on Tuesday. Officer Gillick, a dedicated public servant who has been with RPD since June 2022, was responding to an incident on Democracy Street when the situation escalated into gunfire.

According to authorities, the incident began when officers approached a house, and a suspect opened fire. Despite officers calling for backup, the gunfire exchange continued, leading to Officer Gillick being critically wounded. The suspect, later identified as Antonio Rodrigues, was killed during the confrontation. The tragedy deepened when police revealed that 73-year-old John Rowe had been fatally shot by Rodrigues earlier during the same series of events.

Officer Gillick’s service to his community is deeply rooted in a life of dedication. Before joining RPD, he served as a Captain in Field Artillery with the Army’s prestigious 82nd Airborne Division, receiving an honorable discharge before transitioning to law enforcement. Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. In a statement, she described the resilience and strength shown by Officer Gillick’s family during this difficult time, adding that they have requested privacy as they focus on his recovery.
