Princess Anne Embarks on Solo South Africa Tour Amid Husband’s Injury
Princess Anne recently undertook a meaningful two-day visit to South Africa under unusual circumstances. Her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, was notably absent after sustaining a suspected torn ligament while working at their Gatcombe Park estate. Unable to travel, Sir Tim remained in the UK to recover, leaving the 74-year-old Princess Royal to carry out her engagements solo.
The Princess flew commercially to Cape Town, where she began her trip with an emotional visit to the South African Riding for the Disabled Association. This organization mirrors her longstanding commitment to similar charities in the UK, using therapeutic horse riding to support individuals with physical disabilities. Anne’s presence highlighted her passion for causes that empower individuals through equine therapy.

A key moment of her visit was unveiling the Cape Town Labour Corps Memorial. This newly established monument commemorates over 1,700 predominantly Black South Africans who lost their lives in World War I and have no known grave. In her capacity as President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, a role passed to her in 2023, Anne’s dedication to preserving historical legacies resonated deeply during the ceremony.
Her itinerary also included visits to the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, honoring the iconic South African Archbishop and his fight against apartheid, the Royal Cape Yacht Club, and the South African Astronomical Observatory. Each stop underscored her relentless dedication to bridging cultural ties and supporting impactful causes.
This isn’t the first time the Princess Royal has visited South Africa—her previous trip was during Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Despite the absence of her husband and the long hours of travel, Anne remains steadfast in her duties. Notably, she is often referred to as the "hardest-working royal," a title reinforced by her astonishing schedule of 474 engagements last year alone.
