Shailene Woodley Talks Broadway Debut in 'Cult of Love' and Celebrity Audience Nerves

Shailene Woodley has made her Broadway debut in the play Cult of Love , which is currently being performed at the Helen Hayes Theater, and she’s opening up about the thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking experience. On a recent visit to The Tonight Show , the actress shared her excitement over her role in the production, admitting that the whole experience still feels surreal. "I feel like I still pinch myself every day," Woodley confessed, highlighting just how extraordinary this new chapter in her career has been.

In the interview with Jimmy Fallon, Woodley also touched on the idea of celebrity audiences. She revealed that while she initially had some reservations, she now enjoys knowing when notable figures are in the crowd. "There's a sheet where you can sign in all of your guests who are coming backstage afterwards...And I remember opening it one day and seeing some names that I recognized and the panic set in!" she recalled with a laugh. Despite the nerves, Woodley explained that as an actor, there’s a certain part of you that thrives on that kind of attention. "As an actor, there is a little bit of an exhibitionist in you that does want to perform a certain way knowing someone else is in the audience," she said. It's clear that the energy from an audience, especially one filled with fellow celebrities, has its own unique impact on the performance.

Woodley, who has been acting for nearly 30 years, also spoke about her time on Big Little Lies and mentioned her uncertainty regarding a potential Season 3. While fans eagerly await news on the next installment, Woodley was candid about not knowing when or if the series will return. "I don’t know when Big Little Lies Season 3 will come to fruition," she said, keeping fans on edge.

As for Cult of Love , the production offers a compelling narrative about the Dahl family coming together for Christmas, though the holiday cheer is far from harmonious. The four adult children return home with their partners, and the evening quickly unravels with old conflicts resurfacing and new tensions rising. Will the love the family shares be enough to keep them together, or will it be the last Christmas they spend as a family? Woodley stars alongside a talented cast, including Zachary Quinto, Barbie Ferreira, and Mare Winningham, in this gripping exploration of family dynamics and holiday stress. The play, which also features music and performances that reflect the chaos of the holiday season, is running at the Helen Hayes Theater until February 2, so there’s still time for theatergoers to catch this exciting debut.
