Utah's NHL Team Name Vote Enters Exciting Next Phase
The Utah Hockey Club is taking a major step toward solidifying its identity, and fans are right at the heart of the action. Over the next four home games, attendees at the Delta Center will have the exclusive opportunity to participate in the next phase of voting for the team’s permanent name. This marks a pivotal moment in the franchise’s journey, with Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) ensuring that the community plays a direct role in shaping the team’s future.
Since acquiring the relocated Arizona Coyotes, Ryan and Ashley Smith have been dedicated to making Utah’s NHL team a true community asset. This naming process has been an evolving journey, starting last spring when fans were invited to submit their ideas. The overwhelming response led to an initial list of 20 names, later narrowed to six. Now, the latest round includes not only names but also logo and branding concepts, giving fans a fuller picture of their potential team identity.

The names still in contention? Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth, and the newest addition—Utah Wasatch. The "Wasatch" name pays tribute to Utah’s iconic mountain range and incorporates a mythical snow creature theme, resonating deeply with the state’s natural beauty and folklore. One name, however, has been notably dropped: Yeti. Despite its popularity, the team couldn’t secure an agreement with YETI Coolers, LLC, making it impossible to move forward with that option.
For fans eager to have their voices heard, SEG has made the voting process easy. At each of the upcoming home games—against Pittsburgh (Jan. 29), Columbus (Jan. 31), St. Louis (Feb. 2), and Philadelphia (Feb. 4)—SEG representatives will be stationed around the arena, assisting fans in casting their votes. This round is also more sophisticated than previous ones, utilizing Qualtrics technology to ensure fairness and accuracy through advanced data collection and analysis methods.
Of course, choosing a name is just one piece of the puzzle. The team has also faced hurdles in securing trademarks for its potential names. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently flagged issues with several finalists, including Mammoth and Outlaws, while outright rejecting names like Yeti, Blizzard, and Venom due to conflicts with existing trademarks. However, the team remains confident that they’ll navigate the legal complexities in time for the official announcement before the 2025-26 NHL season.
Utah’s NHL journey has been a whirlwind so far, with passionate fans embracing their new team. The sellout crowds at every game underscore just how much this franchise means to the community. And now, with the permanent name decision drawing closer, fans have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to leave their mark on Utah’s hockey legacy. So if you're heading to one of these games, don’t miss your chance to be part of history—cast your vote and help shape the future of Utah hockey!
