Stormzy Faces Nine-Month Driving Ban After Using Phone Behind the Wheel
Stormzy, the renowned British rapper, has been handed a nine-month driving ban after being caught using his mobile phone while driving his luxury Rolls-Royce Wraith in London. The 31-year-old, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, pleaded guilty to the offense, which took place in March 2024. The incident occurred on Addison Road, in West Kensington, where an off-duty police officer noticed the rapper using his phone behind the wheel. The officer, who was in an undercover capacity, approached the car and instructed Stormzy to “get rid of your tints and get off your phone.”

This incident wasn’t Stormzy's first encounter with traffic-related offenses. Prior to this case, he already had six penalty points on his license due to previous speeding violations. Despite initially denying the accusations, Stormzy later changed his plea, accepting responsibility for his actions. His defense team confirmed that the rapper deeply regretted his behavior and had taken steps to address the situation, including removing illegal window tints from his Lamborghini Urus, a car he had been driving in a separate incident. In October 2023, Stormzy was pulled over for driving the Lamborghini with front windows tinted to only 4% light transmission, far below the legal requirement of 70%.
At Wimbledon Magistrates' Court, District Judge Andrew Sweet condemned the rapper’s actions, calling them "dangerous and irresponsible." The judge emphasized that Stormzy’s driving record was concerning, with the previous offenses adding to the severity of this latest case. As a result, Stormzy was fined £2,010, and an additional six points were added to his driving record, bringing his total to 12 points. With his driving privileges now suspended, Stormzy faces a period without the ability to drive.
Stormzy’s legal representative, Peter Csemiczky, expressed that the artist accepted full responsibility for his actions and offered an apology. He reassured the court that Stormzy had already made necessary adjustments, including removing the tint from his vehicle. This case highlights the importance of responsible driving, especially for public figures who set examples for their fans and the wider community. Stormzy’s actions serve as a reminder of the serious consequences that can arise from simple distractions, such as using a mobile phone while behind the wheel.
