What’s Open and Closed on National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter?
Today, January 9, 2025, the United States observes a National Day of Mourning to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. As part of this solemn occasion, various services, businesses, and federal institutions are affected, though it is not a federal holiday. While many places will remain open as usual, there are key closures you should be aware of.
Firstly, the stock markets will close today. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will observe a rare mid-week shutdown, a tradition dating back to 1865, following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. This marks the second closure for a presidential death in just a few years, as the NYSE also closed in December 2018 to honor the passing of George H.W. Bush. The Nasdaq will also close all equities and options markets, holding a moment of silence at 9:20 AM EST in honor of President Carter’s legacy. However, bond markets will remain open until 2:00 PM EST, per the recommendation from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).

The U.S. Postal Service will suspend its regular operations for the day, meaning no regular mail deliveries will take place, though limited package deliveries may still occur. All federal government offices will be closed, as President Biden’s executive order mandates, with the exception of essential personnel working in defense and national security. This means federal employees will receive a paid day off, but crucial services, such as emergency and defense-related departments, will continue operating.
In addition, the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal courts will also be closed for the day. While public schools will typically remain open, schools affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, including military schools, will observe a closure. National parks will stay open to the public, though administrative offices within those parks will be closed, and the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in Plains, Georgia, will offer extended hours in commemoration of Carter’s life.
It’s important to check specific local businesses and service hours before heading out, as not all locations will observe these closures. Whether you’re planning a visit to a federal office, sending mail, or attending to other matters, this day of mourning serves as a moment for the nation to reflect on the life and contributions of President Carter.
