Aaron Hardie Shines in Australia's Tough ODI Clash Against Sri Lanka
Australia’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo turned out to be a rollercoaster, and one name that stood out in the chaos was Aaron Hardie. The young all-rounder found himself at the center of the action, playing a crucial role with both bat and ball. But despite his efforts, Australia’s preparation for the Champions Trophy got off to the worst possible start, with Sri Lanka securing a 49-run victory.
It all began with Sri Lanka struggling early on, thanks to a fiery spell from Australia's pace duo—Spencer Johnson and Hardie. The pair ripped through the Sri Lankan top order, leaving them reeling at 5-55. Hardie was particularly impressive, finishing with figures of 2-13. His early strikes put Australia in a commanding position, and at one point, it seemed like they would bowl the hosts out for a below-par total.

But then, Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka turned the game on its head. Playing a captain’s knock under immense pressure, he smashed 127 off 126 balls, guiding his side to a respectable 214. It was a classic rescue act, one that exposed Australia’s lack of experienced bowlers. With Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc all unavailable, the Australian attack looked promising but lacked the finishing touch.
When it was Australia’s turn to bat, things quickly went south. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals, and the visitors found themselves in deep trouble. Amid the collapse, Aaron Hardie stepped up again, this time with the bat. He looked solid, trying to anchor the innings and keep the chase alive. At one stage, he even survived a close review after attempting a reverse sweep, but luck wasn’t entirely on his side. He fought hard for his 32 runs before being trapped lbw by Wanindu Hasaranga. Three red lights on the review, and just like that, another Aussie hope was gone.
With Hardie dismissed, it was all but over for Australia. The lower order crumbled, and they were bowled out for just 165. Sri Lanka’s spinners did the damage, with Theekshana and Wellalage picking up key wickets. Despite some resistance from Adam Zampa and a late dropped catch, the Aussies never really looked like chasing down the total.
This loss will undoubtedly raise concerns for Australia ahead of the Champions Trophy. While Aaron Hardie showed glimpses of his potential, the team as a whole struggled under pressure. With their main stars missing, this ODI series will be a true test for the younger players. The question now is—can they bounce back in the next game, or will Sri Lanka tighten their grip on the series? We’ll find out soon enough.
