Archie Goodwin Set to Shine Against Former Club in A-League Clash
This Saturday night, all eyes will be on Coopers Stadium as Adelaide United takes on Newcastle Jets in a highly anticipated A-League showdown. But the biggest storyline? Archie Goodwin facing off against his former club.
Adelaide United coach Carl Veart has no doubts—Goodwin has come a long way since his first meeting with Newcastle earlier this season. Back in December, the young striker struggled to make an impact when Adelaide secured a 1-0 win at McDonald Jones Stadium. Fast forward to now, and it’s a different story. Goodwin is in red-hot form, having scored the match-winner against Melbourne City last week, bringing his season tally to eight goals.
“Archie has really developed,” Veart said. “Earlier in the season, he missed a few chances against Newcastle, but now he’s fitter, stronger, and knows exactly what he needs to do. His movement was fantastic last week, and we’ve worked on a few things with him to sharpen his finishing. Hopefully, he gets a couple of goals on Saturday.”

But it won’t be a walk in the park. Newcastle Jets are coming off a stunning 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory, and their confidence is sky-high. Veart acknowledges the challenge ahead, emphasizing the need for his side to maintain intensity.
“Newcastle is playing good football, and they’ll come at us with confidence. We need to be focused and apply the right pressure,” he said. “If we execute our game plan, we have a great chance of taking the three points.”
Beyond the Goodwin storyline, another former Jet, defender Jordan Elsey, could make his return for Adelaide after recovering from a quad injury. Having played 70 minutes in the youth team last week, Elsey has been given the green light to rejoin the senior squad.
Depending on the outcome of Western United vs. Auckland FC, a win for Adelaide could see them climb to the top of the A-League ladder—a huge incentive for the Reds.
