Christina Hendricks Opens Up About Stardom, Mad Men, and Her New Role
Christina Hendricks is back in the spotlight with her latest project, Small Town, Big Story , a quirky and mysterious comedy-drama set in Ireland. In a recent interview, she shared candid insights about fame, career transitions, and the challenges of being a woman in Hollywood.
Hendricks plays Wendy Patterson, a Hollywood producer who returns to her small hometown in Ireland to shoot a film, only to confront a past that’s filled with disbelief and mystery. "She’s got a real defense mechanism," Hendricks explains. "Something extraordinary happened to her, and no one ever believed her. That kind of experience can shape a person in ways they don’t even realize."
Written and directed by Chris O’Dowd, Small Town, Big Story is a unique blend of humor and drama, exploring themes of identity and truth. The show features an impressive cast, including Paddy Considine as Seamus, Wendy’s former flame, who might just hold the key to the past she’s trying to make sense of.

Reflecting on her rise to fame, Hendricks admits that she sometimes wishes her big break in Mad Men had come earlier. "I feel like my 30s were all about Mad Men . It was an incredible experience, but I would have loved it to have happened sooner. More opportunities might have come my way." Her portrayal of Joan Holloway, the sharp and confident office manager, resonated with many women, and Hendricks still carries some of that confidence with her today.
Fame, however, comes with its own set of challenges. "No one teaches you how to be famous," she says. "You just figure it out as you go. And no one prepares you for what happens when the whirlwind slows down. You really have to ride that river, because it’s ever-changing."
After Mad Men , Hendricks found herself navigating a different kind of Hollywood. "Hollywood is still very much a boys’ club," she says. "But Wendy, like so many women in the industry, has that toughness, proving she can do what a man would normally do—and do it just as well."
Looking back at her early years, Hendricks recalls the challenges of modeling and acting as a young woman in an industry that wasn’t always kind. "I was always aware of power dynamics and had my ‘spidey senses’ up," she says. She credits the people who gave her good advice along the way for helping her navigate the business safely.
These days, fans recognize her just as much for Good Girls , where she played a suburban mom turned criminal mastermind, as they do for Mad Men . And now, with Small Town, Big Story , Hendricks is once again stepping into a role that’s both comedic and deeply layered—just the kind of challenge she was looking for.
