Cyprus Tourism Aims to Break Records Again with Strong 2025 Outlook

Cyprus tourism has been thriving, and after a record-breaking year in 2024, expectations are high for 2025. The island is focused on further extending its tourist season, improving the overall tourist experience, and tapping into new markets. According to Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumis, the ultimate goal is to transform Cyprus into a year-round destination, moving beyond the traditional summer months. Despite the success of 2024, where record numbers of tourists visited and significant revenue was generated, Koumis emphasized that breaking records is not the end goal; it's about ensuring sustainable growth and happiness within the tourism sector.

2024 saw a remarkable boost in tourism, with even the typically quieter months of October, November, and December reaching new milestones, making them the most successful in the history of the country's tourism. In fact, several tour operators extended their programs into mid-November, which highlights the positive momentum. Koumis pointed out that while extending the season is a key priority, working with the months towards the end of the year, especially October, is easier compared to the earlier months like March and April, which are influenced by the Easter period.

Winter tourism has also received special attention, especially with the focus on attracting tourists from colder regions. Targeted online advertising campaigns have proven effective, leading to a 7% increase in winter arrivals compared to the previous year. While the loss of the Israeli market impacted overall numbers, Cyprus has been successful in reaching visitors from other parts of the world. However, Cyprus is still working on diversifying its source markets. New markets, such as the United States, China, and Central Asia, are seen as key areas for long-term growth. Despite the low numbers of arrivals from these regions at the moment, Koumis is optimistic. He acknowledged that it would take time and significant investment to establish Cyprus as a go-to destination in these markets, but the focus is on gradually increasing demand.

Cyprus' tourism landscape has matured, with visitors arriving from over 30 countries. Yet, to continue the growth, Cyprus is now aiming to expand its tourism product beyond the beaches and promote inland destinations. These less-visited areas, which have been underdeveloped for years, are expected to grow and attract more visitors, especially during the off-peak winter months. This expansion of the tourism offering will help in spreading visitor traffic throughout the island and ensure year-round tourism.

The overall outlook for Cyprus tourism is optimistic, with a focus on realistic goals and gradual expansion. By continuing to innovate, reach new markets, and develop new tourism products, Cyprus is on track to keep its tourism industry thriving and set new records in 2025.
