Duke Dominates UNC in Rivalry Showdown
The latest chapter in the fierce Duke-UNC rivalry unfolded with Duke delivering an impressive 87-70 victory over North Carolina. The game, held at the iconic Cameron Indoor Stadium, saw the Blue Devils take charge early and never look back, further cementing their dominance in the rivalry and continuing their undefeated streak in the ACC.
From the start, it was clear that Duke came ready to play. They opened with an explosive 16-0 run that left the Tar Heels scrambling. By halftime, they were up by 22 points, leading 47-25. The Blue Devils were simply in control, shooting an efficient 56% from the field in the first half, including 50% from three-point range. Cooper Flagg, the standout freshman for Duke, was sensational, contributing 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds, while Kon Knueppel's 11 points in the first half helped fuel the charge. It was the kind of performance that not only highlighted Duke’s offensive prowess but also their defensive tenacity, forcing nine turnovers from UNC and turning them into 11 easy points.

North Carolina struggled to find any rhythm throughout the game. The Tar Heels were plagued by turnovers, committing 14 in total, which led to 19 points for Duke. For a team already fighting to stay in the hunt for a spot in the NCAA Tournament, these mistakes were costly. UNC’s offense was inefficient, shooting just 30% in the first half, with only three of 11 from beyond the arc. Jalen Washington was one of the few bright spots for the Tar Heels, scoring six points off the bench, but his time was limited due to foul trouble.
Even as the game seemed out of reach in the second half, North Carolina did show some fight. Drake Powell, who had struggled for much of the season, emerged as a source of energy, scoring all 12 of his points in the second half. His aggressive play and ability to drive to the basket provided a glimpse of what he could bring to the table in the coming weeks. The late push from the Tar Heels, however, was not enough to make a dent in Duke’s commanding lead.
Ven-Allen Lubin also had a solid second half for UNC, contributing seven points and six rebounds, five of which were offensive. His energy and hustle on the boards were crucial for the Tar Heels, but overall, Duke’s size and sharp shooting proved too much for Carolina to handle.
While the loss to Duke is a blow to the Tar Heels' NCAA Tournament hopes, there were some takeaways that could prove valuable moving forward. The team’s defensive scheme, including some zone defense, showed potential, limiting Duke's offense during brief stretches. Additionally, the Heels must continue to focus on limiting turnovers and finding ways to generate consistent offense. With games against Pitt and Clemson looming large, the Tar Heels' path to March Madness is far from guaranteed.
For Duke, this win was another step toward an undefeated ACC record and solidifying their position as one of the top teams in the country. Their balanced attack, combined with a relentless defense, continues to make them a formidable force. As the season progresses, Duke will look to extend their dominance and position themselves for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
