Elon Musk Moves to Shut Down USAID in Agreement with Trump
Alright, let’s talk about something huge that’s making waves right now—Elon Musk has confirmed that he and former President Donald Trump are in agreement that USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development, needs to be shut down. This all comes after days of speculation about the agency’s future, especially after its funding was frozen and a significant number of employees were placed on leave.
In an early-morning discussion on X Spaces, Musk stated that he had gone over the details with Trump multiple times, and the former president agreed that USAID should be dismantled. Now, if you’re not familiar, USAID is a government agency responsible for distributing billions in humanitarian aid and funding global development projects. It’s been around since 1961, playing a major role in U.S. foreign policy by supporting everything from disaster relief to democracy-building efforts worldwide.

However, Musk didn’t hold back his criticisms. He called the agency “incredibly politically partisan” and accused it of supporting “radically left causes,” even suggesting that it has been involved in actions that are “anti-American.” He went as far as to say that USAID isn’t just an organization with problems—it’s a “ball of worms” that’s beyond saving.
This situation escalated even further when two top security officials at USAID were placed on administrative leave after allegedly blocking members of DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency, an office Musk co-founded) from accessing USAID’s systems. Reports suggest that DOGE personnel were trying to gain access to classified information and employee files. There were even threats to bring in U.S. Marshals to force entry into USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C. Eventually, sources say, DOGE personnel did gain access.
This aggressive push to take control of USAID has led to massive backlash. Democratic senators have sent a letter demanding answers about the breach, raising concerns about national security and unauthorized access to sensitive information. The move has also sparked fears among aid officials that the agency is being dismantled for political reasons, without a plan to replace its global development work. Many argue that the State Department lacks the expertise to take over USAID’s projects, and shutting it down would weaken America’s influence abroad.
Musk, however, isn’t backing down. He doubled down on his stance, calling USAID a “criminal organization” in a post on X and saying, “Time for it to die.” Meanwhile, USAID’s official website has gone offline, and its X account was deactivated over the weekend, further fueling speculation that the agency’s dismantling is already in progress.
So, what happens next? That’s the big question. If USAID is truly shut down, it would mark one of the most drastic shake-ups in U.S. foreign policy in decades. But for now, the battle over its future is just getting started.
