French Man Wants to Split Jackpot with Thieves Who Stole His Credit Card
Imagine this—you wake up one day to find out that your credit card was stolen. A nightmare, right? But then, you get an even crazier piece of news: the thieves used your card to buy a lottery ticket… and won a massive jackpot! Sounds like something out of a movie, but this actually happened in France.
Jean-David Estele, a man from Toulouse, had his credit card stolen when thieves broke into his car earlier this month. At first, it was just another case of petty crime—until he discovered that among the things they bought was a lottery ticket that ended up winning €500,000 (about $525,000 ). Now, instead of being angry, Estele has made an unexpected proposal: he wants to split the prize money 50/50 with the thieves!

His lawyer, Pierre Debuisson, explained that Estele sees this as a “miracle” for both himself and the thieves, who are believed to be homeless. The irony is, without his stolen credit card, the winning ticket would have never been purchased. But at the same time, without the thieves' actions, Estele wouldn’t have any claim to the money. So, in a bizarre twist, he’s actually grateful for the crime!
Now, here’s where things get even more interesting. French police have been investigating, but despite finding fingerprints, they haven’t been able to track the two men down. Estele’s lawyer has publicly urged them to come forward, reassuring them that there will be no legal action taken against them. He’s even gone as far as saying that Estele is "extremely happy" to have been the victim of this crime—how often do you hear that?
Of course, there’s a catch. The national lottery operator, Française des Jeux (FDJ), hasn’t received a claim for the prize yet. And if the thieves don’t step up, the money could go unclaimed altogether. Typically, winners have 30 days to claim their prize, so the clock is ticking.
As for what Estele plans to do with his share of the money? He and his wife are hoping to build a new house. But as for the thieves, if they do come forward and agree to the deal, this jackpot could be their ticket to turning their lives around.
It’s a story that’s grabbing headlines worldwide, and it raises an interesting question: what would you do in this situation? Would you share the money, or would you fight for it all?
