Wow, what a night it’s been! If you’ve looked outside this morning, you already know—Toronto and the entire GTA are buried under a thick blanket of snow. More than 20 centimeters have fallen overnight, making this the heaviest single snowfall since March 2023. And guess what? It’s not over yet.

The storm, which started late Wednesday, has disrupted everything from transit to air travel. If you’re trying to get around this morning, be prepared for delays. The TTC is experiencing major disruptions, with streetcars halted in certain areas and buses struggling to navigate slippery roads. GO Transit has also had to adjust its schedules. Even flights at Pearson International Airport were canceled due to the storm, and with 60 km/h wind gusts expected this afternoon, things could get even messier.

Schools are closed across the GTA, with both the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board shutting down operations for the day. Parents, if you were hoping for a quiet work-from-home day, it looks like you’ll have some company!

The City of Toronto has declared a “major snow condition,” which means snow removal teams are out in full force, but with this much snow, it could take days to clear the roads completely. Authorities are urging people to stay off the streets if possible. According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, while there haven’t been too many crashes, cars are getting stuck everywhere—on-ramps, off-ramps, and even just in deep snowbanks.

And here’s the tricky part: while the heavy snowfall should ease up by 8 a.m., strong winds will take over in the afternoon, creating blowing and drifting snow conditions. Visibility will be poor, and roads could become even more dangerous. So if you absolutely must drive, take it slow, leave extra space, and keep your full lighting system on.

At 8 a.m., city officials will provide an update on their response efforts, but for now, it’s safe to say the GTA is in full winter survival mode. If you can, stay warm, stay indoors, and let the plows do their work. If you’re heading out—bundle up, be patient, and drive carefully. It’s a wild winter day out there!
