Power Outages Leave Thousands in the Dark Across Perth Hills and Metro Areas
Hey everyone, let's talk about the massive power outages that are causing chaos across Perth Hills and the metro area. If you're affected, you're not alone—thousands of homes and businesses have been left without electricity, and the situation isn't getting resolved as quickly as we'd all like.
It all started on Wednesday evening when a powerful storm, described by some as a "mini tornado," tore through Mount Helena and surrounding areas. The storm brought heavy rain, hail, and ferocious winds, knocking down trees and power lines. Residents woke up on Thursday to roads blocked by debris, damaged homes, and widespread outages. At its peak, more than 12,000 properties were left without power, and as of Friday morning, about 3,340 homes were still in the dark.
Western Power crews have been working non-stop to restore electricity, but for many, the wait continues. The areas still heavily impacted include Mount Helena, Stoneville, Chidlow, Sawyers Valley, and Gidgegannup. The latest update suggests that some homes might not get power back until 8 PM on Saturday , meaning another long night for those affected.

Meanwhile, in Bibra Lake, South Lake, and Yangebup , nearly 2,000 homes experienced an unplanned outage on Friday morning. Thankfully, power was restored within an hour, but it was yet another reminder of how fragile the system can be.
For those who have been without power for more than 12 hours, Western Power is offering an extended outage payment —not as compensation, but as an acknowledgment of the inconvenience. It’s not much, but at least it’s something. If you come across a fallen power line, make sure to stay at least 8 meters away and report it immediately to Western Power's 24/7 emergency line at 13 13 51 .
This has been a rough few days for many residents, with some dealing with significant storm damage on top of the outages. Businesses like Amaroo Retreat in Mount Helena were hit hard, suffering damage to their restaurant, chalets, and even a water tank. Meanwhile, places like Possum Valley Animal Sanctuary had fences knocked down and water tanks destroyed, though thankfully, no animals were harmed.
The Bureau of Meteorology is still assessing whether this event was officially a tornado, but they’ve confirmed that wind gusts reached 80-90 km/h , and possibly much higher in localized areas. With more storms forecasted for the coming days, residents are being urged to stay prepared.
Let’s hope power is restored soon, and if you're affected, hang in there. Stay safe, stay informed, and keep checking for updates from Western Power.
