President Sheinbaum Inaugurates Military Air Base at Tulum International

In a significant event marking Air Force Day, President Claudia Sheinbaum visited Tulum to inaugurate the 20th Military Air Base at Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. This momentous occasion not only celebrated the 110th anniversary of the Mexican Air Force but also reinforced the nation's commitment to defense, public security, and disaster response.

During the ceremony, Sheinbaum emphasized the pivotal role the Air Force plays in protecting Mexico’s sovereignty, securing national airspace, and supporting citizens during crises. She recognized the dedication of pilots and personnel, highlighting their efforts in defense, disaster relief, and even contributing to the rebirth of Mexicana de Aviación, the country’s flagship airline.

“The Mexican Air Force is a bastion of our nation,” she stated, underlining the institution’s long-standing loyalty and service to the country. She acknowledged its role in national defense, security, and humanitarian efforts, from responding to natural disasters to assisting in air surveillance and control.

The newly inaugurated air base is not just a strategic military asset; it’s also a key component of Tulum’s growing infrastructure. Integrated into Tulum International Airport, the base will enhance airspace monitoring and provide crucial support during emergencies, such as evacuations and firefighting operations during hurricane season.

Governor Mara Lezama, along with top military officials, accompanied President Sheinbaum at the event. Lezama emphasized the significance of the base as the first of its kind in the Riviera Maya, strengthening military capabilities in the region. The presence of high-ranking officials, including the Secretary of National Defense and the Commander of the Mexican Air Force, further underscored the importance of this new facility.

Sheinbaum also took a moment to reflect on the historical significance of the Mexican Air Force. She recounted its origins during the Mexican Revolution and its formal recognition as an armed force in 1944, when Squadron 201 fought in World War II. The continued development of the Air Force, she noted, is a testament to Mexico’s commitment to national security and global responsibility.

As Tulum continues to grow as a key hub in Mexico’s tourism and transportation network, the establishment of Military Air Base No. 20 not only bolsters security but also solidifies the region’s importance in national defense. This move highlights the government’s focus on strengthening the country’s military presence while ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.

With this new facility, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to a strong and prepared Air Force, ready to protect, serve, and support the nation whenever needed.
