AFL Fantasy Opening Round – Players to Watch and Rising Stars
The AFL Fantasy season is here, and the Opening Round gives coaches a free hit to scout some of the hottest prospects before Round 1 officially begins. With a limited slate of games due to the postponement of two matches in Queensland, all eyes will be on Sydney, Hawthorn, GWS, and Collingwood as they hit the field this weekend.
One of the biggest talking points is Sydney's midfield shake-up. With Callum Mills sidelined due to injury, there's an opportunity for emerging talents to step up. Angus Sheldrick ($448,000 MID) is a name to watch, along with Corey Warner ($257,000 FWD), who could provide value if he makes an impact. Matt Roberts ($780,000 DEF) is already in a quarter of Classic teams, and there’s some buzz around debutant Tom Hanily ($230,000 MID), who could make a case for selection with a strong performance.

For Hawthorn, all eyes will be on Will Day ($760,000 MID), who is the only Hawk currently owned by more than 15% of Fantasy coaches. There’s also the intriguing question of James Sicily’s ($896,000 DEF) role – will he play predominantly in defense, or could he push further up the ground? Forward Dylan Moore ($944,000 FWD) is another premium option, but only 11% of coaches have taken the plunge so far.
Meanwhile, GWS has some exciting rookies on the radar. James Leake ($230,000 DEF) and Conor Stone ($230,000 FWD) are two budget-friendly names to consider, while Cody Angove ($271,000 MID/FWD) has impressed in pre-season. The Giants will also welcome back Stephen Coniglio ($789,000 MID) after his off-season surgeries, and many will be watching Finn Callaghan ($789,000 MID) to see if this is his breakout year.
Collingwood’s Nick Daicos ($1,070,000 MID) remains one of the most popular Fantasy picks despite the Pies' early bye, while Harry Perryman ($759,000 DEF) is already in nearly 30% of teams. There’s also some interest in forward-turned-defender Reef McInnes ($324,000 FWD), who could be a sneaky value pick.
Even though Opening Round scores won’t count in Fantasy teams, they will influence player price changes, making this weekend crucial for scouting potential bargains. If you haven’t locked in your AFL Fantasy squad yet, now’s the time to finalize your picks before the season kicks off in full.
Who are you keeping an eye on this weekend?
