Chelsea Edge Past Leicester in WSL Clash with Early Goal
Chelsea took on Leicester City in an intense Women's Super League (WSL) match, and it didn't take long for the Blues to establish their dominance. Just eight minutes in, Catarina Macario stepped up for a free-kick from around 25 yards out. With a bit of luck on her side, her strike took a wicked deflection off Julie Thibaud in the Leicester wall, completely wrong-footing Janina Leitzig in goal. Despite getting a hand to it, Leitzig couldn't stop the ball from sneaking into the net, giving Chelsea an early lead.
From that moment, Chelsea piled on the pressure. Aggie Beever-Jones showed her attacking intent, cutting inside from the left before unleashing a shot that was deflected behind for a corner. Chelsea kept pushing, with Johanna Rytting Kaneryd also coming close, but her touch let her down at a crucial moment inside the box.

Leicester, to their credit, didn’t just sit back. Asmita Ale looked lively on the right-hand side, making a few strong runs forward. However, the visitors struggled to create any real goal-scoring opportunities. One of their better chances came from Janice Cayman, who tried her luck from distance, but Chelsea's goalkeeper Hannah Hampton comfortably dealt with the dipping strike.
As the game progressed, Chelsea continued to look dangerous. Mayra Ramirez had a golden opportunity after turning Sophie Howard inside out, but she fired her shot wide. Leicester had a brief glimmer of hope when they swung a cross into the Chelsea penalty area early on, but Macario was quick to clear the danger.
Going into halftime, Chelsea led 1-0, and while they had chances to extend their lead, Leicester remained resilient. The Foxes had struggled in midweek fixtures before, and history seemed to be repeating itself against a dominant Chelsea side.
With Chelsea aiming to maintain their grip at the top of the table, this narrow lead was crucial. Their history against Leicester has been one of dominance, and while this game wasn’t a high-scoring affair, it showed Chelsea’s ability to control the game. The Blues continue their charge for the WSL title, while Leicester will need to regroup and find a way to break their struggles against the league’s top teams.
