Former Northville Coach Breaks Silence on Championship Game Incident
You won’t believe what happened at the Class D State Championship game last Friday night. Former Northville High School girls' basketball coach, Jim Zullo, has finally spoken out about the shocking incident that unfolded after his team’s heartbreaking loss to La Fargeville. And let me tell you, it’s a moment that has stirred up quite a conversation.
So, here’s what went down. Northville had just lost the championship game, 43-37, and as the Falcons players stood on the sidelines watching their opponents celebrate, emotions were running high. One of the players, Hailey Monroe, was visibly upset—it was their second straight year falling short of the title. Then, out of nowhere, Zullo was caught on camera yanking Monroe’s hair and then confronting her verbally. It all escalated so fast that another player, Ahmya Tompkins—who happens to be Zullo’s niece—stepped in to diffuse the situation. And just like that, the NFHS cameras cut away to focus on the championship celebration, leaving everyone stunned.

Now, days after the incident, Zullo has issued a statement expressing his deep regret. He didn’t hold back, admitting that his actions were completely unacceptable. In his words, "I deeply regret my behavior following the loss to La Fargeville Friday night in the Class D state championship game. I want to offer my sincerest apologies to Hailey and her family, our team, the good folks at Northville Central Schools, and our community. As a coach, under no circumstance is it acceptable to put my hands on a player, and I am truly sorry. I wish I could have those moments back."
He went on to acknowledge how grateful he was for the opportunity to coach at Northville over the past two years, calling his players “incredible young women” and wishing them all the best for the future. But the damage was done—there’s no denying that his actions have left a mark on his coaching legacy.
The Northville Central School District also weighed in, releasing a statement about the incident. While they haven’t detailed any potential disciplinary actions, it’s clear that this moment has sparked serious discussions about coaching conduct and accountability.
At the end of the day, it’s a powerful reminder of the emotions that come with high-stakes sports and the responsibilities coaches carry. For now, all eyes are on Northville to see what happens next. What do you think? Should Zullo be given a second chance, or is this a career-defining mistake?
