Leeds United's Gritty Comeback Stuns QPR in a Thrilling 2-2 Draw
What a game we witnessed at Loftus Road! Championship leaders Leeds United staged a thrilling comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers, despite being two goals down in the first half. It was a match full of drama, moments of brilliance, and a late red card that added even more spice to an already electric encounter.
QPR came out strong, determined to shake off their recent poor form, and their intent was clear from the start. The home side took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to a stunning finish from Koki Saito. The Japanese winger capitalized on a misplaced pass from Brenden Aaronson, curling a beauty past Illan Meslier to send the home crowd into a frenzy. Things got even better for the Hoops when their captain, Steve Cook, doubled the lead in the 30th minute. A well-placed header from a Paul Smyth cross saw Cook find the back of the net, leaving Leeds stunned and scrambling for answers.
Just when it looked like Leeds were in serious trouble, they found a crucial lifeline before the break. Junior Firpo’s effort took a wicked deflection off QPR’s Morgan Fox and ended up in the net as an own goal in the 40th minute. That goal proved to be the turning point of the game, as it shifted the momentum in favor of the visitors.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke made an inspired change at halftime, bringing on Willy Gnonto, and the young Italian made an immediate impact. Within six minutes of the restart, Leeds were back on level terms. A quick counter-attack led to a chance for Jayden Bogle, who made no mistake, slotting the ball past QPR’s Paul Nardi to equalize in the 51st minute.
Both teams had chances to snatch a winner in the closing stages, but the game took a dramatic turn in injury time. Koki Saito, who had been one of QPR’s standout players, saw red for a reckless challenge on Dan James, leaving the home side down to ten men. However, Leeds couldn't capitalize on the numerical advantage, and the match ended in a hard-fought draw.
The result means Leeds now have a three-point lead at the top of the Championship, putting pressure on second-placed Sheffield United ahead of their Steel City derby. For QPR, it was a frustrating night as they let a two-goal lead slip but still managed to end their four-game losing streak.
Daniel Farke acknowledged that his side started poorly but praised their fighting spirit: "To be 2-0 down in an intense week like this and come back is a testament to our resilience. We wanted the win, but given the circumstances, it’s a good point on the road."
As for QPR, manager Marti Cifuentes had mixed feelings: "We started brilliantly and played with great energy, but we faced a top team that punished our mistakes. The red card didn’t help, but overall, we showed we can compete at this level."
A thrilling encounter, a stunning comeback, and yet another reminder of why the Championship remains one of the most unpredictable and exciting leagues in world football!
