Montreal Faces Coldest March Morning in 18 Years, Storm on the Horizon

Hey everyone, let's talk about this crazy weather we're experiencing! Montreal just woke up to its coldest March morning in nearly two decades. We're talking temperatures plunging below -22°C at the airport, making it the coldest we've seen in March since 2007! And if that wasn’t enough, the wind chill made it feel like a bone-chilling -30°C. Now, that’s not something we experience often in March—only five times since the year 2000, to be exact!

If we look back in history, some of the coldest March days include March 6, 2007, when temperatures dropped to -24.3°C, and the all-time lowest recorded for the month was March 4, 1950, at a staggering -29.4°C! So yeah, this kind of extreme cold in March is pretty rare, but here we are.

Now, before we start thinking winter is overstaying its welcome, there’s a big shift coming—though it might not be the kind of relief we were hoping for. A strong storm system is developing, and it's set to hit mid-week. This one’s coming from Colorado and is expected to bring a messy mix of rain, strong winds, and much milder temperatures. By Wednesday, some areas south of the St. Lawrence could even see temperatures nearing double digits! Sounds great, right? Well, not so fast.

With 15-25 mm of rain expected by Thursday and all that snow melting, there’s a real concern about flooding. On top of that, there’s a risk of freezing rain early Wednesday before the temperatures rise. So, it’s going to be one of those weeks where we go from freezing to mild and wet, and then back to colder conditions again once the storm passes. But the good news? Mid-to-late March is expected to bring above-seasonal temperatures, so hopefully, we’ll be stepping into spring soon.

Make sure to stay updated, dress for the wild temperature swings, and keep an eye out for potential flooding risks. Winter may be making a dramatic exit, but spring isn’t quite here yet! Stay safe, everyone!
