Farewell to a Legend: Walford Mourns Martin Fowler
Hey everyone, I’ve just finished watching one of the most emotional episodes of EastEnders in a long while, and I had to talk about it. This week, we said goodbye to one of the Square’s most iconic characters—Martin Fowler. And honestly, it hit like a ton of bricks. Martin, the ever-familiar fruit and veg man, the heart of Albert Square, made his final journey through Walford, and the entire episode was nothing short of a gut-punch.
The funeral itself was a rollercoaster. Seeing those familiar faces—Sharon, Vicki, Sonia—all trying to keep it together just made it all so real. But the one that really tore me apart? Stacey. She came back home just in time for the funeral, but she was an absolute mess. Grieving, drunk, and drowning in guilt. It was hard to watch because you could see how broken she was, how much she blamed herself for what happened.

Martin died in such a shocking way—a cardiac arrest after being crushed by a beam in The Queen Vic. One minute he was there, planning a future with Stacey, and the next, he was gone. And that’s what makes this episode so heartbreaking. It’s not just the loss, it’s the unfinished story. He and Stacey had just rekindled their love—yes, they were going to remarry! But that secret dies with him, and the pain of that loss lingers with everyone he left behind.
Lily, their daughter, is spiraling. She’s angry, confused, and dealing with way too much for a kid her age. Her fury at Stacey boils over, accusing her of destroying everything—including her relationship with her dad. Their screaming match, followed by Stacey slapping her own daughter… yeah, that moment will stick with me for a while. It was raw, real, and painful.
And then there’s Ruby. Her tension with Stacey finally erupted, fueled by old wounds, betrayal, and unresolved feelings. Their confrontation at the wake, and later at the allotment, didn’t just stir the pot—it boiled over. Ruby ends up leaving Walford entirely, leaving more broken ties behind.
The most symbolic moment though? The burning of Martin’s fruit and veg stall. Watching that fire rage felt like everything he stood for was being erased. And it pushed Stacey to her edge—she needs answers. She’s determined to find out who did it, even when Jack tells her to let the police handle it. But you know Stacey—she’s never one to sit back and wait.
By the end of the episode, we’re left wondering: can Stacey and Lily ever heal from this? Will Ruby ever return to fix what’s been shattered? And how does Walford move on from losing someone who’s been part of its soul for so long?
EastEnders really outdid itself with this one. It was emotional, dramatic, and a powerful reminder of how deeply these characters and their stories are woven into our lives. Martin Fowler may be gone, but he’s left a mark that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
Rest easy, Martin. Walford won’t be the same without you.
