Measles Outbreak in Ontario Sparks Cross-Border Warnings

Hey everyone, just a quick heads-up because this is something we all need to take seriously — the measles outbreak in Ontario is not just a local concern anymore. It's getting so intense that even the state of New York has issued a travel advisory, warning its residents about the growing risk just across the border in Canada. In their own words, “Measles is just a car ride away!”

This isn’t just a scare tactic. The numbers are real and they’re rising. As of this week, Ontario has reported a staggering 661 measles cases since the outbreak began last fall. That includes 89 new cases just this week alone. For context, between 2013 and 2023, Ontario only saw 101 confirmed measles cases in total. That’s a whole decade of cases now surpassed in a matter of months. And if that doesn't raise alarms, consider this — in 2024, there were only 64 cases. Now, we’ve already blown past that in just the first few months of 2025.

The New York State Department of Health isn’t holding back. They’re warning that with spring and summer travel ramping up, unvaccinated travelers are at serious risk — both of catching the virus and of bringing it back home with them. And they’re not wrong. Measles is one of the most contagious viruses out there — way more contagious than COVID-19 or the flu. In fact, if you’re not vaccinated and you’re exposed to someone with measles, there’s a 90% chance you’ll catch it.

This outbreak actually started from a travel-related case in New Brunswick back in October. That province managed to contain it, but unfortunately, Ontario is still grappling with widespread transmission.

It’s not just Canada that’s seeing a surge, either. Measles cases are rising globally — from countries like India, Thailand, and Pakistan to parts of Europe and Africa. But what makes the Ontario situation especially alarming is how it threatens Canada's measles elimination status. If this outbreak isn’t brought under control soon, we could officially lose that status — a designation we’ve held for years.

So what can we do? The solution is clear and available: vaccination. The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) or the MMRV (which also protects against varicella/chickenpox) are both safe and effective. One dose gives you 85–95% protection, and a second dose brings it close to 100%.

Bottom line — whether you're in Ontario, New York, or planning to travel anywhere right now — check your vaccination status. Talk to your doctor. Protect yourself and others. Measles isn’t just a childhood illness or something from the past. It’s here, it’s spreading fast, and we all have a role in stopping it.
