Tragedy Strikes Jet Set Nightclub During Rubby Pérez Performance
Last night, what was supposed to be a vibrant and joyful Monday night at the iconic Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo turned into a heartbreaking tragedy. While merengue legend Rubby Pérez was performing during one of the venue’s well-known “lunes bailables,” a part of the club’s roof collapsed, sending shockwaves across the country.
The scene quickly shifted from celebration to chaos. Witnesses described a loud, sudden noise followed by screams and confusion. As debris rained down onto the crowd, many were trapped under rubble, with others frantically trying to escape. Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, and the nation watched with anxiety as the situation unfolded in real time.
The director of the Center for Emergency Operations (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez, confirmed that several people lost their lives in the collapse. However, he emphasized that all current efforts are focused on rescuing those who may still be alive beneath the debris. Méndez was joined on site by the National Police Chief, General Ramón Antonio Guzmán Peralta, and high-ranking officials from the military, fire department, and Civil Defense.

Over 370 rescue workers and 77 ambulances were deployed to the scene, along with specialized equipment including the Hurón team, trained to handle collapsed structures. Survivors and the injured were rushed to several medical centers across the city, including Centro Médico Cubano, Centro Médico Real, Darío Contreras, and others.
Among those injured was Rubby Pérez himself, who was performing at the moment of the collapse. His manager confirmed his condition and that he was receiving medical attention. In the midst of tragedy, there were stories of resilience—some trapped individuals managed to call their loved ones from under the debris, helping guide rescuers to their locations.
President Luis Abinader responded swiftly, ordering the full use of national resources to manage the emergency. Authorities have cordoned off the area and are urging the public to stay away while rescue operations continue. The mood outside Jet Set is heavy, with families waiting desperately for news of their loved ones.
Méndez made it clear: no one is being left behind. He stated, "We will not leave here while there is still one Dominican under the rubble. That is our commitment."
Jet Set, a beloved venue in Santo Domingo’s nightlife scene, has long hosted music legends and lively crowds. But today, its name is marked by mourning. The nation stands united in grief, hoping for more survivors and answers in the coming hours.
