Canadian Tourist Found Dead After Vanishing in Mexico's Dangerous Surf
I'm heartbroken to talk about this today — a tragic story that’s been making headlines involving a young man from Saskatoon, Canada. His name was Braydon Bretzer, and he’s sadly been found dead after going missing from a beach in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
Braydon was only 31 years old. Just days ago, he and his American friend Chris Ankele, 40, were seen swimming in the ocean at Zicatela Beach — a spot known for its powerful surf and strong currents. It’s a popular destination for surfers, but it’s definitely not ideal for swimming. Witnesses say the two were pulled away by a dangerous rip current and quickly vanished beneath the waves.

Search and rescue teams, including lifeguards and local civil protection units, launched a desperate effort to find them. On Monday afternoon, video footage captured the heartbreaking moment when Braydon's body was discovered floating in the water by a search boat. Unfortunately, as of now, Chris Ankele is still missing.
This isn’t the first tragedy at Zicatela Beach. In recent years, multiple tourists have lost their lives in these unpredictable waters, despite warning flags and repeated advisories from lifeguards. It's a grim reminder that even paradise has its dangers.
Braydon’s death is more than just another news headline. He was a former youth soccer coach and a freelance marketing consultant. Friends describe him as a vibrant, generous person — someone who truly made others feel seen and valued. His friend Graeme Bouvier launched a fundraiser to help Braydon’s family bring his remains home, writing, “Braydon lived life to the fullest. He had a contagious energy and a heart that made space for everyone.”
What’s especially difficult is that Braydon’s story resonates with so many of us who travel in search of joy and adventure. None of us ever expect our vacations to end in heartbreak. But this tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of heeding local warnings — especially when it comes to natural forces like the ocean.
As we wait for more news about Chris, our hearts go out to both families. Braydon’s passing is a devastating loss, not only for his loved ones in Canada but for anyone who has known the beauty — and the risk — of the ocean.
