Remembering Red Sternberg: A 90s Icon and Beloved Family Man
It’s with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Red Sternberg—an actor many of us grew up watching in the 1990s, especially in the hit youth drama “T.G.I.S.” Red, who played the unforgettable role of “Kiko,” passed away on the morning of Tuesday, May 27, just three days before his 51st birthday.
This news was confirmed by his wife, Sandy Sternberg, in an emotional Facebook post that laid bare her grief. What was supposed to be a month of joyful birthday celebrations turned into a time of unimaginable sorrow. Sandy wrote, “To be greeted ‘happy birthday’ and ‘sorry for your loss’ at the same time for three consecutive days... May was our month! The 5th, 28th, 29th, and 30th.” Red’s birthday was supposed to be on May 30, and instead of cake and candles, there were tears and tributes.

Sandy went on to say that while many knew him as Kiko, the charming, youthful star from television, to their three children and to her, he was simply “Daddy” or “Dada.” Her words were not only a eulogy for a husband but a glimpse into the personal, quieter life that Red led—a life full of love and commitment to his family, far from the spotlight.
Tributes have poured in from friends and colleagues, including “T.G.I.S.” director Mark Reyes, who expressed heartbreak over the loss. “The entire T.G.I.S Barkada is heartbroken to lose one of our own,” he posted, tagging other members of the show’s beloved original cast like Angelu de Leon, Bobby Andrews, Rica Peralejo, and Ciara Sotto. “Kiko, we love you, and we’re giving you a group hug right now.”
Red Sternberg wasn’t just a celebrity—he was part of a cultural moment in Philippine television. “T.G.I.S.” wasn't just a show; it was a generation’s Saturday ritual, a mirror of youth, friendship, and coming-of-age experiences. Red's portrayal of Kiko helped define that era, and for many of us, he wasn’t just an actor—we saw ourselves in him.
His sudden passing is a sobering reminder of how fleeting life can be, even for those who seemed larger than life in our memories. There has been no official word on the cause of death, and Sandy has asked for privacy as their family navigates this incredibly painful time. Memorial arrangements will be shared in due course.
As we remember Red Sternberg, let’s not only revisit the joy he brought us onscreen but also respect the quiet legacy he leaves behind as a devoted husband and father. He may be gone too soon, but to the hearts he touched, both as “Kiko” and “Dada,” he will always be remembered.
