Antony Ready to Sacrifice Pay to Force Manchester United Exit
It’s becoming increasingly clear that Antony’s time at Manchester United is reaching its conclusion—and he’s making no secret of his desperation to move on. In a bold and telling move, the Brazilian winger is reportedly willing to slash his weekly wage by a massive 30 per cent just to secure a summer transfer away from Old Trafford.
When Antony arrived in Manchester from Ajax in 2022 for a staggering £85 million, expectations were sky-high. He was one of Erik ten Hag’s marquee signings—brought in to inject flair, urgency, and cutting-edge skill into United’s right flank. But after a promising start, Antony failed to maintain consistency. Over nearly 100 appearances, he managed only 12 goals, and his impact fell well short of the huge investment made in him.

That underwhelming performance led to his loan move to Real Betis during the January 2025 transfer window. And that’s where the story takes a sharp turn. In Spain, Antony rediscovered his form and confidence, contributing nine goals and five assists and helping Betis reach the Europa Conference League final. He became a fan favourite almost overnight, and his revival didn’t go unnoticed.
Betis want to keep him—but financial limitations are holding them back. They’ve made Antony their top priority for the summer, and now, with the winger’s willingness to take a wage cut—from £150,000 to around £100,000 per week—Betis may find the door opening for a renewed deal. Whether that’s another loan or a permanent transfer depends on United’s stance, which currently leans toward a sale to meet financial sustainability rules.
United are reportedly looking to recoup at least £32.5 million from any Antony deal to avoid a loss under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. With interest from clubs in Spain, Germany, and Italy—Bayer Leverkusen in particular—Antony’s future could lie outside of Betis too. A reunion with former manager Erik ten Hag in the Bundesliga might be an enticing possibility.
Interestingly, this isn’t just about money or minutes on the pitch. Antony’s social media message—"Focus On Our Goals"—paired with the visible support from teammates like Rashford and Onana, suggests a player who is mentally locked in on a fresh start. While United have been busy in the transfer market, including the signing of Matheus Cunha, Antony seems determined not to be left behind or sidelined again.
Manchester United now face a dilemma. Antony has shown there’s still a talented, driven player in there. But can they afford to keep him on their books at a time when they need both financial flexibility and performance guarantees? If Betis can raise funds, possibly through the sale of midfielder Johnny Cardoso, they may yet make a permanent move happen. But one thing is clear—Antony wants out, and he’s willing to take a hit to make it happen.
