Remembering Jonathan Joss: A Voice Silenced Too Soon
Hey everyone. I want to take a moment to talk about someone whose voice touched millions, and whose life was cut tragically short — Jonathan Joss. You probably know him best as the voice behind John Redcorn from the beloved animated series King of the Hill . Sadly, Jonathan was killed in a shooting in San Antonio at the age of 59. It’s heartbreaking, and I feel like we should take a moment to truly remember who he was — not just as a character, but as a person.
This wasn’t just some random incident. According to multiple sources and a statement from his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, this was a hate-fueled attack. The shooter, reportedly a neighbor, confronted Jonathan and his husband with violent homophobic slurs before opening fire. They weren’t armed. They weren’t threatening anyone. They were grieving — standing side by side at the site of their former home, which had been burned down earlier this year after repeated threats. Jonathan even found the remains of one of their beloved dogs at that very spot. Imagine the pain they were already going through before things turned fatal.
Jonathan’s husband shared that in Jonathan’s final moments, he saved a life — he pushed him out of the line of fire. That’s the kind of man he was. Courageous, loving, and fiercely protective.

And Jonathan wasn’t just a voice actor. His work went beyond Redcorn. He appeared in shows like Parks and Recreation , Ray Donovan , ER , and even films like True Grit and The Magnificent Seven . He was also a musician, performing with The Red Corn Band , a tribute to the role that made him a household name. Just days before the shooting, he was performing live, full of gratitude and life.
What hurts the most is knowing he had already recorded for the upcoming revival of King of the Hill . We'll get to hear his voice one more time, and it’ll be incredibly bittersweet. His death isn’t just a loss for TV and film — it’s a painful reminder of the hate still out there. This wasn’t just violence. This was a targeted, senseless act against love and identity.
Jonathan Joss brought culture, humor, and truth to every role he played. His legacy will live on — through the episodes we still quote, the music he made, and the people who loved him. Rest in peace, Jonathan. You deserved more time, more love, and more peace. We’ll never forget your voice.
