Sunshine and Screams as The Hoppings Lights Up Newcastle’s Town Moor

If you’re anywhere near Newcastle this week, chances are you’ve already heard the buzz: The Hoppings has returned to the Town Moor, and it’s arrived with perfect summer weather and record-breaking thrills. With clear skies, scorching 30°C temperatures, and a city brimming with anticipation, this iconic event is already setting the tone for an unforgettable summer.

The Hoppings isn't just any funfair—it's Europe’s largest travelling fair, and this year it’s bigger, better, and hotter than ever. After days of preparation and setup, the gates officially swung open on Friday, marking the start of ten full days packed with rides, food, live music, and family fun. What’s more, 2025 marks the 143rd year since this grand tradition began back in 1882. What started as a Temperance Fair has now evolved into one of the biggest annual highlights in the region.

The site itself is absolutely massive. More than 400 attractions have taken over the Town Moor, stretching out from the towering Big Wheel, which dominates the skyline. And the heatwave? It’s playing the perfect supporting role. For once, Newcastle has dodged the rainclouds and delivered wall-to-wall sunshine, drawing massive crowds from day one. You can practically feel the excitement in the air.

Among this year’s standout features is the adrenaline-pumping Drop Tower—touted as the tallest mobile freefall ride in the world. Clocking a mind-blowing 4.5g-force, it’s a must-try for thrill-seekers. You drop at terrifying speed with the entire cityscape shrinking beneath you—then snap back to earth in seconds. It’s wild. And it’s turning heads.

But if that’s not your speed, don’t worry. The Hoppings caters to every age and taste. From classic dodgems and elegant carousels to whirling thrill rides like the Disco Twist, there’s something for everyone. And when you need a break? Head over to the Hoppings Village, the new central hub featuring a food and drink area, live music stage, and a dedicated Kids’ Club for younger visitors. Whether you’re after churros, loaded fries, or Chinese noodles, the food stalls have you covered.

Local charities were also in the spotlight at the opening, with children from the community given the first ride tickets—an amazing gesture that highlights the heart behind the funfair. Newcastle’s Mayor, Councillor Henry Gallagher, officially opened the event, calling it one of the proudest traditions of the city.

Looking ahead, the excitement isn’t slowing down. On June 26, Jamie Lee Harrison—Britain’s Got Talent star and local favourite—is set to perform on the Live Lounge stage, adding to the feel-good summer energy pulsing through the fairground.

The Hoppings is running until June 29, and with this perfect combination of sunshine, good vibes, and pure fun, it’s not something you want to miss. So whether you're craving heart-racing rides, family laughs, or just the nostalgia of candy floss and fairground lights—now’s the time. Newcastle is truly buzzing, and The Hoppings is where the summer magic is happening.
