Tragedy Strikes Suncorp as Devoted Broncos Fan Passes Moments Before Kick-Off
It was supposed to be a night of celebration at Suncorp Stadium—a moment to honour Broncos captain Adam Reynolds in his 300th NRL game, with the team wearing all-black jerseys to support mental health awareness. The stands were packed, the energy was electric, and fans were gearing up for a fierce clash against the Gold Coast Titans. But just moments before the whistle blew, that atmosphere took a sudden and heartbreaking turn.
A long-time Brisbane Broncos club member suffered a severe medical emergency right at the venue, moments before kick-off. Despite the swift response of paramedics and first responders, the man could not be revived. It was later confirmed that he had suffered a fatal heart attack.
Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy spoke emotionally after the match, calling it “horribly sad” and expressing the club’s heartfelt condolences. “Our thoughts are with the family right now, and of course we will do whatever we can to support them at this difficult time,” Donaghy said. He also praised the professionalism and courage of the first responders, who faced an incredibly challenging situation in front of thousands.

As a tribute, the Broncos will donate a jersey to the man's family, which they plan to lay atop his coffin—a deeply moving gesture that reflects how important fans are to the lifeblood of this club. This wasn’t just a supporter lost—it was a member of the Broncos family.
The timing of the incident made the emotional weight of the evening even heavier. The game was not just a milestone for Reynolds but also a showcase for the club’s partnership with the Black Dog Institute, an organisation that pioneers mental health research across all stages of life. The team’s all-black jersey, specially designed in collaboration with the institute, was a visual commitment to the cause—and it gained widespread support from fans.
While the Broncos went on to dominate the Titans 44-14, the victory felt bittersweet. The win, the celebrations, the tributes—all took place under the cloud of unexpected tragedy. As the stadium echoed with cheers for a win and respect for Reynolds’ career, there was also a silent, shared mourning for a fan who didn’t get to see the team take the field one last time.
This incident reminds us of the deep emotional connections fans have with their clubs. For many, it’s more than just sport—it’s community, identity, and passion. And when one of those devoted members is lost, it’s not just a death—it’s a loss felt across the entire stadium.
May he rest in peace, knowing his team played with heart, and that he was honoured in the very place he loved most.
