Aaron Judge Sidelined with Elbow Injury as Yankees Face Phillies
So here’s the big news coming out of the Bronx: Yankees fans are holding their breath because Aaron Judge—yes, the Aaron Judge—is not in the lineup against the Phillies today. And it’s not for rest. According to manager Aaron Boone, the reigning AL MVP is dealing with a right elbow issue, and as of now, they’re still waiting on imaging results to understand just how serious it is.

Now, the issue apparently started earlier this week. During a game against the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Judge made a throw from the outfield and was clearly grimacing in pain. Even though he stayed in that game and played through the next two matchups—one more with Toronto and another with Philly—things didn’t get better. The Yankees had a day off Thursday, and there was hope that would give him some relief, but by Friday, Judge was struggling to even make basic throws from right field.
Boone admitted he’s concerned, though he’s staying cautious until the imaging results come in. And honestly, who wouldn’t be? Judge went 0-for-3 with a sac fly in Friday night’s blowout 12–5 loss to the Phillies. That, combined with the Blue Jays picking up a win, dropped the Yankees 5½ games behind in the AL East. They’re still holding the top Wild Card spot for now—but missing Judge for any stretch of time could be a massive blow.
Judge is having another monster season. He’s slashing .342/.449/.711 with 37 homers through just 103 games. He’s leading the Majors in just about every offensive category you can name—OPS, WAR, total bases—you name it. That’s why he’s the clear front-runner for AL MVP again, potentially grabbing that award for a third time.
To add to the drama, this is the first game Judge is missing all season, and it comes just as the Yankees made a move to acquire third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies—maybe as insurance, maybe part of a bigger deadline strategy. Either way, Judge’s absence could definitely force some front office rethinking depending on how long he's out.
The Yankees are currently 56–47 with a league-best run differential of +99. So yes, they’re in decent shape, but without their captain, even a few weeks could throw the playoff race into chaos. Hopefully, for the Yankees—and baseball fans in general—this elbow issue turns out to be minor. But right now, everything’s on pause as we wait for that scan.
