Bayer Leverkusen Confirms Goalkeeper Matej Kovář’s Loan Move to PSV Eindhoven
Bayer Leverkusen has officially confirmed the departure of Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovář, who is set to join Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven on loan. The 25-year-old shot-stopper will spend the coming season in the Eredivisie, with the move including a purchase option. Depending on certain conditions being met, this clause could evolve into a mandatory purchase — a key detail for both clubs as they shape their squad strategies for the future.
As of now, Kovář remains under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2027, which means Leverkusen is not entirely closing the chapter with him just yet. The loan allows him to gain valuable match experience at a high level, and possibly opens the door to a permanent stay in Eindhoven if things align.

There was some anticipation leading up to this deal, especially regarding Manchester United's role in the process. The English club held a "matching right" — essentially a clause that allowed them to intervene should they wish to bring Kovář back into their fold. But that window has closed, and the path was cleared for Leverkusen and PSV to finalize their agreement.
The reported transfer sum, should PSV choose or be obliged to make the move permanent, is around €5 million, potentially rising to €7 million with bonuses. A solid figure for a goalkeeper who, while not having had many appearances in the Bundesliga (only 6 over two seasons), has shown promise and professionalism behind the scenes.
This transfer marks yet another shuffle in Bayer Leverkusen’s goalkeeping department and continues PSV’s trend of strengthening their squad aggressively. Some fans have even jokingly remarked that Eindhoven is now experiencing more squad turnover than Wolfsburg during the infamous “Quälix” era.
Regardless of where he ends up long term, this is a good opportunity for Matej Kovář. PSV is a strong side, regularly competing in European tournaments, and this move could be a stepping stone toward him securing a long-term starting role at a top-tier club.
So to Matej — thank you for your dedication at Leverkusen. Good luck in Eindhoven. Let’s see where this new chapter takes you.
