Danny DeVito’s April Fool’s Prank Script Was Wildly NSFW—and Hilariously Genius
Let me tell you about one of the funniest behind-the-scenes pranks you’ll ever hear—one that only someone like Danny DeVito could make even more legendary. If you thought It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia couldn’t get any more unhinged, just wait until you hear what happened off-camera.
So, Danny DeVito, the iconic actor behind the absolutely chaotic Frank Reynolds, shared a story recently that honestly sounds like a deleted scene from the show itself. It all went down on April 1st—yep, April Fool’s Day—but DeVito, in his usual whirlwind of work, had no idea what day it was. He gets a script delivered to his house, supposedly the new episode they were about to shoot. He’s told to read it immediately because there's been a switch, and they’re doing this new episode instead.
Danny sits down, starts reading, and everything seems pretty typical at first—Frank gets arrested for picking up a hooker. Okay, classic Sunny stuff. But then it gets wild. Like, disturbingly, graphically wild. The next 30 pages, according to DeVito, were nothing but prison scenes involving Frank being relentlessly assaulted by just about every possible authority figure in the worst ways imaginable. He describes it as being “butt-fucked” repeatedly—by white supremacists, cops, in showers… it gets rough.

Understandably, DeVito gets really nervous. Not quite lawyer-level nervous, but definitely what the hell are we doing on basic cable nervous. So he calls the cast—Rob, Glenn, Charlie, Kaitlin—and guess what? They’re all on speaker, dying with laughter. Turns out, the last line in the script was: “April Fool’s, motherfucker.” That was the punchline to 30 pages of fake trauma.
But Danny didn’t let them have the last laugh. Later on, he got his revenge during a big press event. He conned a hotel manager into cramming four cots into one tiny room and tricked the rest of the cast into thinking that was where they’d be bunking for the night— with Glenn and Charlie’s wives joining too. Tensions flared, panic ensued, and just as calls to network execs were about to happen, DeVito popped in to reveal the prank.
Classic Frank move, honestly.
This entire thing is such a testament to how much the cast truly embodies their chaotic on-screen personas even when the cameras aren’t rolling. The commitment to nonsense is so strong, they’ll write an entire fake episode just to mess with each other. And Danny DeVito? He might’ve been the target this time, but he proved he’s still the king of the curveball.
