ESPN's Chris Russo Nearly Arrested in Heathrow Golf Club Meltdown
Imagine you’re at one of the busiest airports in the world, you’ve just landed from a long-haul flight, and the only thing standing between you and a weekend of world-class golf in Scotland is... a missing set of golf clubs. That’s exactly what happened to ESPN’s famously animated host, Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, and let’s just say — it did not go quietly.
Russo, back from a 17-day European trip, recounted the ordeal live on ESPN’s First Take in what can only be described as a full-blown, on-air rant. His son, Tim, had flown from Phoenix to London via Dallas, only to arrive in Inverness—south of their final destination in Dornoch—without his golf clubs. The clothes made it. The all-important clubs? Not so much.

Russo, waiting at Heathrow for a connecting flight, got the dreaded text from his son: “Dad, my golf clubs didn’t make it.” Now, for most people, this might spark some concern. For Russo? It ignited a two-and-a-half-hour mission through Heathrow, a chaotic quest filled with confusion, bureaucracy, and mounting frustration.
“I found the clubs!” he yelled, recalling the moment of success. But the victory was short-lived. Heathrow staff told him he couldn’t remove the clubs from the airport due to protocol. That’s when the situation exploded.
“I’m not interested in protocol! I’m interested in the 5-iron!” Russo shouted, embodying every parent who’s ever had to fight travel logistics for their kid. Things got so heated, British Airways staff reportedly called the police. “I’m a loud American!” Russo said. “They’re like, ‘We’re going to get the authorities.’ I said, ‘I don’t give a crap about authorities — get the golf clubs where they’re supposed to be!’”
Although he wasn’t ultimately arrested, the police did arrive, and Russo had to reel it back in. “I told them, ‘I’ll be okay. Calm down,’” he said with a grin, clearly self-aware of how over-the-top the whole episode had become.
It’s classic Mad Dog — theatrical, passionate, a little chaotic — and frankly, pretty relatable. Anyone who’s ever lost luggage or battled airline “protocol” knows the exact frustration he felt. Russo’s rant might have left his co-hosts in stitches, but for travelers everywhere, it hit a little too close to home.
All over a set of golf clubs. Only in Heathrow. Only Mad Dog.
