Joe Gomez Flies Home Early After Fresh Injury Setback

So, here's the latest update coming out of Liverpool's pre-season tour—and unfortunately, it's not the kind of news fans were hoping for. Joe Gomez has had to cut his time short in Asia after picking up a minor Achilles injury. The club has confirmed that he’s flown back to Merseyside to receive treatment at the AXA Training Centre.

Now, this is especially frustrating for Gomez, who had only just returned to full fitness after a tough end to last season. He’d been sidelined for the final few months with a hamstring issue, and the pre-season was supposed to be his big opportunity to rebuild momentum and prove himself to Arne Slot’s new regime. He'd even managed to get a couple of decent runouts in friendlies against Preston and Stoke. Things were starting to look up.

But during a training session in Hong Kong, he began to experience some discomfort in his Achilles. After evaluating the situation, the medical team and Slot agreed that it made more sense to bring him back to England rather than keep him with the traveling squad. Slot explained that while Gomez had been with the group for the first part of the week, it was better to let him recover under more stable and controlled conditions at home, rather than push him while constantly traveling and training.

The good news is that the injury is believed to be minor, and there’s hope he’ll be back in action soon. Still, it's a big blow for both the player and the squad. With Jarell Quansah sold to Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds are already short on centre-back options. Right now, only three senior centre-backs are fit, and with Gomez out, Liverpool might need to accelerate their plans in the transfer market. Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace is one of the names being linked, and talks could heat up as a result of this situation.

Gomez’s absence also means a reshuffle for the remaining pre-season fixtures, with Ryan Gravenberch now likely to drop deeper and partner Virgil van Dijk against AC Milan. It's not ideal prep for the season ahead, but these things happen in football. Let’s hope Gomez’s recovery goes smoothly and that he's back on the pitch sooner rather than later.
