Mitchell’s Late Heroics Lift Tiger-Cats Over Lions in Thriller

Let me tell you about one of the most exciting CFL games we’ve seen so far this season — the Week 8 showdown between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the BC Lions. It was a back-and-forth battle that had everything you’d want in a football game — lead changes, clutch plays, and a dramatic finish.

With just 16 seconds left on the clock, Bo Levi Mitchell threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Kiondré Smith, sealing a 37–33 comeback win for the Tiger-Cats. That throw capped off an incredible night for Mitchell, who passed for 389 yards and three touchdowns. It was the fifth straight win for Hamilton, and the momentum they’re building is becoming hard to ignore.

Smith was a standout, hauling in 14 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He wasn’t the only one making plays either — Brendan O’Leary-Orange and Jake Dolegala each contributed touchdowns, and kicker Marc Liegghio remained perfect, hitting three field goals and all four extra points.

On the other side, the BC Lions had their moments. Quarterback Nathan Rourke threw for 289 yards, and running back James Butler had a monster game with 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Backup QB Jeremiah Masoli also punched one in on a sneak, and kicker Sean Whyte did his part by hitting four field goals. Despite that, the Lions couldn’t hold onto their lead in the final minutes.

The game didn’t start smoothly for either team. On Hamilton’s first play, a fumble was recovered by BC deep in Ticat territory, leading to Butler’s first touchdown. But Hamilton answered quickly, with Dolegala scoring on a sneak, and the teams traded blows from there. Big plays defined the night — from a 73-yard catch-and-run by Keon Hatcher to Ayden Eberhardt’s 43-yard reception that set up a late Lions touchdown.

But the game’s story was ultimately written by Bo Levi Mitchell. After trailing by 10 points late in the fourth, he led two clutch drives — one ending in a deep strike to O’Leary-Orange, the other in the game-winner to Smith.

What makes this win even more significant is how Hamilton’s supporting cast continues to step up. With BC’s defense keying in on Kenny Lawler, guys like Tim White and Kiondré Smith took full advantage, helping open up the field.

As the Lions now head into a bye week, they'll no doubt be looking to regroup before a rematch with these very same Tiger-Cats in Hamilton. One thing’s for sure: after this thriller, fans will be counting down the days to the next chapter.
