Virgin Plane Collides with Tug at Melbourne Airport During Tow
So, there was a bit of an incident at Melbourne Airport that’s making headlines—thankfully, no one was hurt, but it definitely raised a few eyebrows. On Sunday evening, around 8:40pm, a Virgin Australia aircraft—specifically a Boeing 737—was involved in a collision while being towed to a maintenance hangar at Tullamarine.
Now, what actually happened was that the plane somehow became disconnected from the tug vehicle that was towing it. Once it got loose, it rolled and ended up striking the tug from the side. As you can imagine, that’s not something you want happening with a commercial aircraft, even when it’s not carrying passengers. And yes, in this case, the plane was completely empty—there were no passengers onboard at the time, and none of the ground crew were injured, which is a big relief.

Footage from the scene shows some pretty visible damage to the front left side of the jet. Crews were seen taping up the cracked fuselage, so there’s clearly some structural repair work ahead. The aircraft involved is typically used on Virgin’s domestic routes, so it’s one of those planes many people have probably flown on before.
Virgin Australia has said that despite the incident, they’re not expecting any disruptions to their flight schedule. So, if you’re flying Virgin today or this week, there's no need to panic—operations should continue as normal.
But beyond the immediate impact, this incident has prompted some larger conversations. The Transport Workers Union (TWU) came out quickly after the news broke, pointing to what they’re calling a wider crisis in the aviation industry. They’ve called for an urgent briefing with Virgin to figure out how incidents like this can be prevented in the future. Michael Kaine, the TWU's national secretary, said they want everyone involved in aviation—airlines, airports, and service providers—to come together and work towards improving industry standards and safety practices.
It’s one of those events that might seem like a freak accident at first glance, but for people working behind the scenes in aviation, it raises serious questions about maintenance protocols, staffing levels, and safety oversight.
So yeah, it was a strange and unfortunate mishap, but luckily, it didn’t turn into a tragedy. The plane’s grounded for repairs, and hopefully, lessons are learned to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.
