Rick and Morty Season 8 Finale Teases Emotional Payoff and Spin-Off Surprises
So, Rick and Morty just wrapped up its eighth season with the finale titled "Hot Rick" , and it’s definitely got people talking—for more reasons than one. Dan Harmon, the show’s co-creator, opened up about what’s been going on behind the scenes, and it sounds like things are moving faster than ever before. In fact, he admitted that he’s already writing episodes for season 10, which has led to some confusion—even for him. He joked that he’s become his own “Chevy Chase,” losing track of what’s aired and what hasn’t because the team is so far ahead of schedule.
This is a pretty big shift for Harmon, who used to be known for obsessively tweaking every episode, often right up until the deadline. Now, he says, they’re so on schedule it actually feels alien to him. He even joked about waking up in a cold sweat, wondering how to mess things up just to slow it all down. But the truth is, Rick and Morty is cruising into its next seasons full speed ahead. Voice work for season 9 has already started, and the writers are deep into crafting season 10.

Now, the finale itself— Hot Rick —takes a deeper dive into Rick's character, and it’s not just wild multiverse antics this time. Dan Harmon reflected on how Rick has changed since the show debuted back in 2013. He pointed out that starting with a totally nihilistic, sarcastic genius might have worked back then, but growing the character is part of what’s kept the show fresh. He acknowledged that some fans might see Rick evolving emotionally as “softening,” but he sees it as a natural progression—especially considering, as Harmon puts it, “edginess doesn’t age well.”
Showrunner Scott Marder also teased that Hot Rick offers a solid explanation for why Rick is the way he is, and ties together some threads from the season in an emotional way. Sarah Chalke, who voices both Beth and Space Beth, called it one of her favorite seasons ever, especially because of how unexpectedly emotional the finale turned out to be.
And if that wasn’t enough, they also announced a brand-new spin-off at San Diego Comic-Con called President Curtis , with the voice of Keith David returning. This one’s not going multiverse-crazy—it’s more of a grounded sci-fi tale, “more X-Files than Doctor Who,” as Harmon put it. It’s centered around President Curtis protecting Earth, with some seriously quirky characters, including a half-leprechaun agent and a chief of staff with brain-enhancing AI implants.
So yeah, Rick and Morty fans are getting not just more of the multiverse madness they love—but a new corner of the universe to explore too. And with this much content already in the pipeline, the future’s looking chaotic in the best way.
