Tornado Watch Issued for Southeast Wisconsin—What You Need to Know Today
Hey everyone, just a quick but very important weather update coming out of southeast Wisconsin this Friday, July 11. As of late this afternoon, the National Weather Service has officially issued a tornado watch for several counties across the region. This watch is in effect until 11:00 p.m. tonight and includes Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine, Walworth, and Waukesha counties.
So, what does a tornado watch mean? It means that conditions in the atmosphere are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. It doesn’t necessarily mean a tornado will happen, but it does mean we all need to be alert, stay updated, and be prepared to take immediate shelter if a warning is issued. Tornado watches are serious, and today’s unstable weather is worth keeping an eye on.

As of now, we're seeing showers and storms pushing through much of the area. Forecasters say the biggest threat will come later this afternoon and into the evening, with storms capable of producing strong winds, hail, and yes—even tornadoes. These systems can develop quickly, so staying connected to live updates is crucial.
If you’re in any of the affected counties, I highly recommend keeping your phones charged and notifications turned on for any emergency alerts. You can download the FOX6 Storm Center app , FOX LOCAL mobile app , or FOX Weather app to track the storm in real time. They’ve got up-to-date radars, maps, and forecasts—really useful tools when you’re trying to navigate severe weather like this.
Also, make sure you’ve got a plan in place. Know where your safe shelter is—preferably a basement or interior room away from windows. And if you're traveling this evening, keep a close eye on the forecast before heading out. Sometimes a delay could be the safest decision.
And remember, schools or businesses in your area might issue closures or delays, depending on how intense the storm activity becomes. Local media and apps will be your best bet to stay in the know on that front.
Let’s stay weather-aware tonight. These storms can change fast, and it’s always better to be overprepared than caught off guard. Stay safe out there, Wisconsin. I’ll keep watching for updates and pass along anything important as it develops.
