Trey Lance Makes a Statement in Chargers Debut During Emotional NFL Opener

So, here's something that had fans talking—Trey Lance might just be rewriting his NFL story. In his first preseason outing with the Los Angeles Chargers, Lance looked like the quarterback everyone hoped he’d be when he was drafted third overall. He threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Chargers to a commanding 34–7 win over the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame Game. And it wasn’t just the scoreboard that left an impression—it was how calm, confident, and in control he looked out there.

This game wasn’t just about football, though. Things started off on a somber note, with a moment of silence held to honor the victims of a tragic shooting that happened earlier in the week outside NFL headquarters in New York. Four people were killed and one league employee was injured. Security was noticeably heightened around the stadium, and Commissioner Roger Goodell shared that he had visited the wounded employee, who is thankfully recovering.

Now, back to the game. This was Lance’s first big chance to show what he can do in a real-game setting since bouncing between teams. After a tough start to his career in San Francisco, followed by a stint in Dallas, he's now competing in L.A. for a backup role behind Justin Herbert. And honestly, he played like someone with a point to prove.

The Chargers wasted no time—recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff and converting it into a touchdown with a perfectly placed 5-yard pass from Lance to tight end Will Dissly on a gutsy fourth-and-2. Then came a big defensive play—rookie Nikko Reed intercepted a Lions pass and brought it all the way to the 6-yard line. That set up a short TD run by Kimani Vidal, making it 14–0.

Lance wasn’t done. After Detroit cut the lead to 14–7, he answered with a drive that ended in another touchdown—this one a 15-yard strike to KeAndre Lambert-Smith. He finished his night completing 13 of 20 passes before handing things over to rookie DJ Uiagalelei.

On the other side, Detroit played it safe. Most of their starters—like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jahmyr Gibbs—didn’t suit up. And it showed. Quarterback Kyle Allen threw two interceptions, and sloppy special teams play handed the Chargers great field position more than once.

It wasn’t all bad news for Detroit, though. Aidan Hutchinson, their star pass rusher, told NBC he’s ready and excited for Week 1 against the Packers. He even made time to sign autographs for fans before the game.

The night wrapped up with some missed kicks, a few more scores, and anticipation building for the regular season. And while it’s only preseason, Trey Lance may have just taken the first big step in finally turning potential into performance.
