Vancouver Gears Up for Celebration of Light with Unprecedented Security Measures
Hey everyone, have you heard what’s going down in Vancouver this weekend? The iconic Honda Celebration of Light is back — that massive fireworks festival lighting up the skies over English Bay. But this year, it’s not just about the pyrotechnics. The city is stepping things up in a big way when it comes to security — and for good reason.

After what happened at the Lapu Lapu Festival earlier this year, where a tragic vehicle ramming shook everyone, Vancouver Police and event organizers aren’t taking any chances. They're deploying hundreds of extra officers , and I mean 400 more than usual, to make sure everyone’s safe. You’ll see them all over — on foot, on horseback, even in the air with drones. It's easily the biggest police presence the city pulls together all year.
And get this — they’re installing steel and concrete barriers , some weighing over 300 kilograms , at all key access points around the downtown core and Kits Point. Denman Street, usually shoulder-to-shoulder with people during the event, will have heavy-duty security to keep vehicles out. It’s part of a broader safety plan that’s been in the works for years, but now, after April’s tragedy, it’s getting a major boost.
Organizers are clear — they’ve always prioritized safety, but now it’s being “enhanced” to protect everyone coming to enjoy the show. Drones? Only official ones are allowed. Public drinking? Still a no-go. And forget driving — there’ll be road closures and rerouted buses all over downtown. TransLink’s stepping up though, with extra SkyTrain runs, boosted SeaBus service, and even a special West Coast Express train on the final night, July 26.
Despite all these new layers of security, the vibe remains celebratory. The fireworks are still the main event, with teams from Quebec, Yukon, and Nova Scotia competing to wow the crowd. This isn't just a show — it’s a tradition. It’s about community, creativity, and, now more than ever, caring for one another’s safety .
So if you're heading out to the Celebration of Light, expect a few changes. Plan ahead, leave your car at home, and give yourself some extra time. And most importantly — enjoy the spectacle knowing the city’s doing everything it can to make it a safe and unforgettable experience for everyone.
