Actor Song Young-kyu Found Dead Amid Controversy and Career Fallout
So, this is some really sad and shocking news from the Korean entertainment world. Actor Song Young-kyu , who many might recognize from the 2019 blockbuster Extreme Job , was found dead in his car earlier this morning, August 4th, in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The news broke out quickly, and it's hit fans and the industry hard.
He was discovered around 8 a.m. by an acquaintance who immediately called the police. Authorities have confirmed there were no signs of foul play and no suicide note was found either. An autopsy is reportedly being considered to determine the exact cause of death, but at this point, no suspicious circumstances have been revealed .

What adds a layer of tragedy to this is that Song had recently been under intense public scrutiny due to a DUI incident that happened just a few weeks ago in June. He was caught drunk driving in the same city, Yongin, driving about five kilometers while intoxicated. Though the incident occurred in mid-June, it didn’t become public knowledge until late July. Once the news came out, there was a huge backlash. He ended up stepping down from a major theater production , Shakespeare In Love , and producers from other shows began to quietly distance themselves. His scenes were either cut or minimized in two upcoming projects, The Defects and The Winning Try . So, in just a matter of weeks, his career took a massive hit.
And now, with his sudden passing, there are more questions than answers. The police are reportedly speaking to his family to try and better understand what may have led up to this tragic outcome.
Song Young-kyu wasn’t a household name for leading roles, but he was a very familiar face to Korean film fans. His performance as the gruff but loyal Chief Choi in Extreme Job left a real impression. That film was a major box office success , and his portrayal added a lot of weight to the ensemble cast.
