British Woman Vanishes from Greek Beach While Husband Sleeps
So, here's a really strange and worrying story that's unfolding right now in northern Greece. A British woman named Michele Ann Joy Bourda, who’s 59 years old, has gone missing from a beach near the town of Kavala. She was last seen on August 1st, relaxing on a sunbed at Ofrynio beach — a beautiful spot with golden sand and clear blue waters. But sometime around noon, while her Greek husband was reportedly taking a nap on the sunbed next to her, Michele just disappeared.
Her belongings were still right there — sunglasses, beach gear, everything — but she was gone. No one saw her leave, and there’s been no sign of her since. As you can imagine, this has sparked a massive search effort. The Greek coastguard, local police, and even volunteers have been out scouring both the land and the sea. They've been using patrol boats, fishing vessels, drones, and search dogs, hoping to find any clue that might lead them to her.

A charity called LifeLine Hellas quickly issued what’s known in Greece as a Silver Alert — that’s typically used for older adults or people with conditions like dementia who go missing. They described her as slim, around 5ft 6in tall, with straight blonde hair to the shoulders. On the day she vanished, she was wearing a two-piece swimsuit decorated with beads, yellow water shoes, and red plastic sunglasses. Authorities believe her life could be in danger.
Her disappearance is still a mystery, and Greek officials have been hesitant to speculate. They're saying it's too early to draw conclusions — no one knows whether she wandered off, had a medical episode, or if something more serious happened. As of now, there's no decision yet about when the official sea search might be called off, but patrols will continue daily.
Interestingly — or perhaps alarmingly — this isn’t the only case like this recently. Just last month, another British tourist, Jay Arnold, vanished from the island of Karpathos. His rental car was found parked and locked, but he too hasn’t been located. And even earlier this summer, a well-known British TV doctor, Michael Mosley, tragically died from heatstroke after getting lost on a Greek island.
With record-breaking temperatures in Greece this summer, the extreme heat might be playing a role in some of these disappearances. Still, in Michele Bourda’s case, no trace has been found — and that makes it all the more baffling. For now, her family and the authorities are holding on to hope, and the search continues.
