Cats Crush Swans to Seal Finals Spot
Geelong’s trip to the Sydney Cricket Ground turned into a statement performance, as the Cats powered past the Swans by 43 points to officially lock in their spot for September. The match, played in round 23 of the AFL Premiership season, had a shaky start for Geelong, but once they found their rhythm, they simply took control and never looked back.
Sydney came out firing early, stunning the visitors with the opening three goals of the game. Their ball movement looked slick, and the crowd of more than 37,000 at the SCG felt that something special might be on the cards. But that surge was quickly met with a strong response. Geelong steadied, settled into their system, and by quarter-time they had levelled the scores thanks to a burst of four unanswered goals.

The real story of the opening half belonged to Shannon Neale. The young forward was everywhere in the air and reliable in front of goal, kicking four majors before halftime. Every time the Swans threatened to get away, Neale dragged Geelong back into the contest. Tyson Stengle also had his moments of brilliance, including a dazzling solo effort that put the Cats in front at the main break. By then, the visitors had momentum, but it still felt like a genuine arm wrestle.
Things shifted after halftime. Geelong’s defence—anchored by Jack Henry, Sam De Koning, and Tom Stewart—locked in. Between them, they piled up intercept marks and made life miserable for Sydney’s forwards. The Swans could manage only one goal from 14 inside-50 entries in the third quarter, and that set the stage for the Cats to pull clear. Stengle nailed a tough boundary set shot, Gryan Miers punished a defensive lapse, and slowly the margin grew. By three-quarter time, the Cats were 26 points ahead and looking comfortable.
The final term was about sealing the deal. Stengle immediately lit things up again with his third goal, and Shaun Mannagh added his name to the scoreboard with three of his own. While star forward Jeremy Cameron was held goalless—a rare sight this season—the Cats showed they had plenty of other scoring options. In all, eight Geelong players kicked majors, a spread that would delight coach Chris Scott as his side gears up for finals.
On the other side, Sydney had Peter Ladhams working hard in the ruck, Tom Papley buzzing through the midfield and sneaking forward for two goals, and Chad Warner along with Errol Gulden trying to provide spark. But the Swans couldn’t sustain their early intensity, and their defensive cracks were ruthlessly exposed by a more seasoned outfit.
When the siren sounded, the scoreboard read Geelong 16.15 (111) to Sydney 10.8 (68). It was a professional and commanding win, one that not only confirmed Geelong’s place in the top eight but also reinforced their credentials as a genuine contender heading into September. Sydney, meanwhile, was left to rue another missed opportunity in front of their home fans, closing out their final SCG appearance of the season on a flat note.
