Emil Hansson Loaned to Blackpool in Search of Game Time
So, here’s what’s been happening with Emil Hansson—he’s officially been loaned out to Blackpool for the 2025/26 season by Birmingham City. Now, this might come as a bit of a surprise to some fans, but if you’ve been following his situation over the past year, it kind of makes sense.
Hansson only joined Birmingham City last summer from the Dutch side Heracles, and while there was a bit of buzz around him at the time, his first season didn’t exactly go to plan. Injuries—specifically a string of muscular problems—meant he couldn’t get into a consistent rhythm. He ended up making just 20 appearances in League One last season, with a single goal and a couple of assists to show for it. On top of that, he had a few outings in the cup competitions, but nothing too headline-grabbing.

Fast forward to this summer, and the Blues have been making moves—most notably signing Demarai Gray. With Gray coming in and players like Keshi Anderson already in the mix, Hansson’s chances of regular first-team action were looking slim. In fact, he was even left out of the squad that went to Portugal for pre-season training, which is usually a pretty clear sign. He didn’t play in the first couple of friendlies either, though he was given some minutes against Port Vale recently—maybe just to put him in the shop window.
Chris Davies, Birmingham’s manager, seems to have made his mind up. Hansson just isn’t in the club’s immediate plans, so a loan move was really the best option for everyone involved. And here’s the interesting bit: he’s gone to Blackpool, a club managed by none other than former Blues boss Steve Bruce. Blackpool have already taken goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell on loan from Birmingham this summer, so there’s definitely a bit of a connection forming there.
This could actually be a great opportunity for Hansson. He’ll have the chance to rebuild his confidence, stay fit, and—hopefully—get a good run of games under his belt. For Blackpool, it’s a low-risk signing with potential upside, especially if Hansson finds his form again.
So, while it’s a bit of a step back on paper, it might just be the kind of move that helps Hansson reset and relaunch his career. We’ll see how it plays out over the season.
