'Hamilton' Movie Hits Theaters This Fall for the First Time Ever
So here’s something exciting— Hamilton , the blockbuster Broadway musical that totally reshaped how we think about American history and musical theater, is finally hitting the big screen. Yes, the movie version of Hamilton is getting an official theatrical release this September. And no, not a reimagined film adaptation—this is the live capture of the original cast’s performance that was famously filmed back in 2016 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of the show, dropped the news himself on The Tonight Show , announcing that fans will be able to experience Hamilton in theaters nationwide—and in Puerto Rico—starting September 5 . And it’s not just a re-release of the Disney+ version; this one includes some new footage , including a special prologue called “Reuniting the Revolution,” where the original cast and creators reflect on the show’s impact. So if you thought you’d already seen it all, this release brings something fresh to the table.
Now, this film has been quite the journey. It was originally intended for a theatrical release back in 2021, but then the pandemic changed everything. Instead, Disney+ premiered it early in July 2020, and it was a huge hit—racking up Emmy nominations and winning a couple, including Outstanding Variety Special. But the dream of bringing Hamilton to theaters wasn’t forgotten. And now, as part of the show’s 10th anniversary celebration, that dream is finally being realized.
This release isn’t just for U.S. audiences either—Canada and Puerto Rico will get it on the same day, followed by the UK and Ireland on September 26 , and Australia and New Zealand on November 13 .
The original film captures the magic of the stage production, featuring the full powerhouse cast: Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs, Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry—you get the idea. It’s the same crew that won 11 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
And get this—before the general release, there’ll be a special screening event on September 3 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Advance tickets will be available by donation starting August 11, and all proceeds go to The Public Theater—the very place where Hamilton got its start.
So, whether you’re a die-hard fan or someone who missed the Broadway run (or the Disney+ drop), this is a rare chance to experience the full impact of Hamilton where it belongs: in a theater, with an audience, larger than life. Don’t throw away your shot.
