Josh Brolin Says He’d Return as Thanos in a Heartbeat

You know how some actors say they’re “done” with a role after a big finale? Well, that’s not the case for Josh Brolin when it comes to Thanos. In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin made it clear — if Marvel picked up the phone and said, “Hey, we need you in London for Avengers: Doomsday,” he’d be packing his bags before they even hung up. His exact words? “I’ll be there tomorrow.” That’s not just enthusiasm — that’s loyalty to a character he helped make unforgettable.

Brolin, of course, brought the Mad Titan to life in multiple Marvel films, culminating in Avengers: Endgame . Thanos’ arc was considered complete after his defeat, but in the Marvel multiverse, “complete” rarely means “final.” And Brolin isn’t new to double duty in the MCU either — fans might remember him also playing Cable in Deadpool 2 . While he admits he was fine leaving Cable as a one-time thing, Thanos seems to have left a deeper mark on him.

Interestingly, Brolin is still in close contact with the Russo Brothers, the directors who helped shape Thanos’ epic story. He says he talks to Joe Russo “four to six times a week” and clearly has a lot of admiration for both Joe and Anthony Russo. And it just so happens the Russos are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday . So, the door? Definitely not closed.

Now, Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday already has its big bad — Robert Downey Jr., in a twist, is playing Doctor Doom. The cast list is a blockbuster dream: Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, and so many more, including familiar faces from the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and even Loki himself. Kevin Feige recently said the set is buzzing with creative ideas from actors who know these characters inside out — and that they’re constantly “plus-ing” the story.

As for Thanos actually showing up? The official line is: unlikely. He was killed off in Endgame . But Marvel has a whole multiverse at its disposal now, and in that playground, dead doesn’t always mean gone. Even a cameo in Avengers: Secret Wars isn’t impossible — it would certainly send fans into a frenzy.

Whether or not we see the big purple Titan again, it’s clear Josh Brolin’s fondness for the role hasn’t faded. In his own words, he doesn’t know what Marvel will do next — but if they want him, he’s ready. And in the MCU, where surprises are part of the game, that’s all it might take for Thanos to snap back into our lives.
